About Tawa Sandwich

For a potato lover like me and my family, this Tawa Sandwich is a really good option for times we just want to indulge in something yummy and also easy to make. It brings together, best of both the worlds – a yum potato stuffed sandwich made on a tawa or griddle.

A tawa is a flat or a concave shaped pan used often in Indian cuisine to roast roti, chapati, parathas, to make Dosa and also to pan fry snacks like Aloo Tikki, various vegetable fries and more.

This Griddle Sandwich is good if you do not have an electric sandwich maker or a panini press. You can make any grilled sandwich using this method.

But if you have a sandwich maker, then following the same recipe, you can easily toast or grill the sandwiches.

Additionally if you do not have a tawa or griddle, make these sandwiches in a frying pan or a flat skillet.

For the easiest Tawa Sandwich, all you need is a good homemade loaf, mashed potatoes and the regular Indian spices like chaat masala powder and red chili powder. I also add some finely chopped onions and bell peppers for an extra crunch in the snack.

Using the same method as I have detailed here, you can easily make your favorite sandwiches with various stuffings for a crispy, toasty and tasty grilled sandwiches.

I make this Griddle Sandwich as a quick bite on some days. When I boil potatoes, I boil some extra. You never know when they will come handy.

I then, refrigerate them and use in a day or two. You can use those boiled potatoes to make a variety of snacks like:

  • Bread Roll – A bread snack with a soft spiced mashed potato filling that is deep fried.
  • Potato Sandwich – Grilled version of the comforting sandwich stuffed with a savory stuffing.
  • Bread Pakora – Bread slices filled with spiced potato filling, batter coated and deep fried

Choice of Bread

For making this Tawa Sandwich, I always use a Whole Wheat Loaf. Most of the times I bake the whole wheat bread at home. So, when I plan to have sandwiches for snacks or breakfast, I bake the loaf a day or a couple of days before and refrigerate.

In this recipe of Griddle Sandwich too, my choice of bread has been homemade whole wheat bread.

With whole wheat breads, the sandwiches are not light, but are filling. They do keep you full for some time. In addition, you can also amp up the taste of this sandwich by adding some grated cheese or paneer in the stuffing.

Serve this Tawa Sandwich with tomato ketchup or Eggless Mayo or any dip. It also goes very well with a freshly made homestyle Mint Coriander Chutney.

Step-by-Step Guide

How to make Tawa Sandwich

Make Potato Stuffing

1. Peel and mash 1 large boiled potato or 2 medium potatoes (150 grams).

You can steam or boil or pressure cook the potatoes in a stovetop pressure cooker, in a pan or the Instant Pot, adding water as needed.

Remember to drain all the water very well from the potatoes. Let them become warm, and then peel & mash the potatoes nicely.

9. Now, place a lid on the sandwiches. On top of the lid, place a weight and toast for a few minutes.

You can also only place a heavy lid. The plate I used is not heavy. So, I kept a heavy mortar on it.
