This is one of those many Bread Recipes that you can make for snacks when throwing a party or a get-together at your home. Not just that, even if you are wanting to indulge in something really different and tasty once a while, this Bread Cheese Roll will be at your service. This is an easy to prepare bread roll with a spiced cheesy potato stuffing. Another good thing about this Cheese Roll is that it is baked. So, you can actually eat a piece or two, without feeling extremely guilty!
About Cheese Roll
As I said earlier, here I have shared a recipe of Cheese Roll which is basically a healthy version of a bread roll with a cheese stuffing and baked. So, there’s the usual fried version of a Bread Roll and then there’s this baked Bread Cheese Roll.
Of course, fried food has its own charm but there’s absolutely no harm in having baked food, once a while. This not only balances out the calorie intake. In fact, you don’t have to really exercise harder as you do after consuming sinfully fried snacks.
However, this is a Cheese Roll recipe, which means it has a decent quantity of cheese in it. So, you have to put some effort in burning that part of calorie intake. But not so much as compared to the fried rolls, as this one is baked and is much more wholesome that way.
Now if you ask me which cheese is best for this baked Bread Cheese Roll, I will say, use either cheddar or processed cheese. But in case you are wanting to experiment it with mozzarella cheese to get a stringy, gooey effect, then go for it. You can also make these rolls with any bread variety.
In addition to the bread, cheese and potatoes, other ingredients that go in the stuffing are your usual everyday pepper powder, cumin powder, coriander leaves and salt. You can brush the Cheese Roll with oil or even butter.
I often make this delicious Bread Cheese Roll as a quick snack on days when I prefer to bake, rather than sauté or fry. Baking or grilling is better as I just need to place the food in the oven and let it get done.
This recipe of Cheese Roll shared here is just a basic method and you can choose the stuffing you want. I usually go for the classic potato-cheese combination. Sometimes, I also add some boiled green peas, cooked carrots or green beans in the filling.
You can choose the veggies you want. You can also opt for flavors you prefer by using your choice of herbs and spices. This recipe is a super hit with kids too, as its low on the spice quotient.
Serve the crispy golden baked Bread Cheese Roll as an evening snack or as a brunch with tomato ketchup or coriander chutney. They also make for a great starter snack.
How to make Cheese Roll
Preparation
1. First, boil 1 medium to large potato till it is completely cooked. Peel and chop.
You can cook the potato in a pan on the stovetop, a pressure cooker or the Instant Pot adding water as needed.
2. Mash the potatoes while still warm and keep aside.
3. Then, grate 50 grams cheddar cheese. You can use any cheese like processed cheese or cheddar cheese or mozzarella cheese.
In cup measurement, you should get ½ cup tightly packed grated cheese.
4. Add the grated cheddar, ¼ to ½ teaspoon black pepper powder, ½ teaspoon cumin powder and 1 tablespoon chopped coriander leaves and a pinch or two of salt to the mashed potatoes.
5. Mix very well and set aside.
Make Cheese Roll
6. Thinly slice the edges/corners from 9 to 10 bread slices.
7. With a rolling pin, flatten the bread slightly. Apply light pressure. If rolled too much, then the bread slice will tear.
8. Spread a thin layer of butter on the flattened bread slice.
9. Take 2 tablespoons of the potato-cheese mixture and place it on one side of the flattened bread slice.
10. Brush some water on the 4 edges of the slices. You can also dip your fingertips in water and moisten the edges.
11. Now, gently cover the bread slice and press the edges to form a rectangular roll. You can also moisten your fingers with some water and then press.
Baking Cheese Roll
12. Prepare all the Bread Cheese Rolls this way and place on a baking tray. No need to grease the tray.
Lightly brush some oil on the rolls. Don’t brush too much oil as the bread absorbs a lot of oil at room temperature.
The bread I used was crumbly and not easy to roll. If there are tiny tears, then no issues.
Also remember to preheat your oven for 10 minutes at 200 degrees C/390 degrees F before you bake these rolls.
13. Bake in a preheated oven at 200 degrees C/390 degrees F for 10 to 12 minutes or till the roll becomes golden and crisp. As oven temperatures vary, keep a check while baking.
14. Once done, remove from the oven and serve Cheese Roll hot or warm with some tomato ketchup or coriander chutney.
Expert Tips
- You can make these rolls with any bread that you have at home – whole wheat, brown or white.
- Cheddar cheese or processed cheese are best for this recipe. You can even try the recipe with mozzarella cheese.
- In addition to the potato-cheese stuffing, you can add your choice of veggies, spices and herbs in the filling. Green beans, carrot and green peas also taste great in the stuffing.
- While moistening the edges of the bread slices, you can either use a brush to do so or dip your fingertips in water and then moisten the edges.
- You don’t have to grease the baking tray before placing the prepared rolls on it. Make sure to lightly brush the rolls. Do not brush too much oil on the rolls as the bread absorbs a lot of oil at room temperature.
- While baking the rolls, keep a check as the temperatures vary from oven to oven.
- If you have leftover stuffing, you can make regular sandwiches, wraps or rolls or stuffed parathas with it.

welcome preety. thanks for sharing your experience. glad 🙂
Could I prepare the rolls and freeze them, so that I can use them when required? Or would they become soggy?
they will become soggy. i suggest to make the stuffing and refrigerate. it stays good for a couple of days. then you bake the rolls when you want.
Hi may I knw if this recipe can be tried out in the microwave as I don’t have an oven
the recipe cannot be made in the microwave oven.
Delicious roll but instead of roll I made it flat as while rolling they broke out dnt know why. .. …Some how manage to arrange them ..They came out really well … I used capsicum and cabbage for filling no cheese as it was my first try …but I m happy with the result …I will make them again in the evening wen my husband vl b back frm office with cheese filling …. u r superb dasanna … wenver i crave for something ur website help me alot …. I I have made many Recipies with your help …yesterday I made cookies third time as previously they got burned …was very scared but they cme out well nd m soo encouraged for baking that today I made bread roll …many baking recipies lined up for next week ……I m enjoying cooking. ..all thanks to you. .
thanks meeti for the feedback. depending on the quality of bread, the slices can be rolled easily or not so easily. any mix veg filling goes well with these rolls. i am so glad that the recipes are helping you. i also get scared like you after a baking disaster. i also have them at times. today i also made my tried and tested choco chip muffins. after some trials and disasters i have got an eggless recipe correct. once the experiment was so bad, that i had to discard all the muffins. the baking powder ditched me. with some hesitation i tried making muffins again and they turned out good. so all these things do happen. planning to add some more baking recipes 🙂
hi mam,i made these bread rolls ..but it tasted more like a toast….why ?and if we make any cookies with refined oil instead of butter or ghee then what procedure will be followed ?should we beat oil and sugar first then add in dry ingredients or any other procedure ?
shuchi, the bread must have got too much bake and toasted, hence the toast like texture. for cookies made with oil, depending on the recipe & ingredients you can make changes. one method is to rub oil in the flour like how we do for kachori or samosa. second method is to just mix the powdered sugar with oil. third is to mix everything and make the cookie dough.
mam, before baking anything what should be the preheating time ?or its vary with the recipe ?
generally its 10 to 15 minutes for most baking recipes. variations are for some kind of bread and pizzas which required a more longer preheating time.
mam,why is this not necessary to grease the tray and also oil brushing has to be done only at top na ?and if using black tray still then too no need of greasing ?
no need of greasing as the bread won’t stick on the tray. if it was raw dough then there would have been a possibility of sticking on the tray. brushing oil has to be done on the top and side. bottom no need.
is this completely safe to use ovenproof aluminium trays and other utensils in any otg ?
most baking proof trays can be used in any OTG. but the pan or tray has to be meant for baking. a tray or pan not meant for baking, cannot be used in any oven.
Hi mam, currently i have only black baking tray meanwhile i m planning to purchase an aluminium tray which will give more better results…from where i can get this ?and now if i plan to make these bread rolls on my black tray then what the temperature and time should be set for baking and also the same for preheating the otg as u mentioned that black tray works so quickly…plz reply to this…..
shuchi, aluminum trays can be got from a local shop which sells baking cookware. you should also be able to get them in super stores. just reduce the temperature to 15 to 20 degrees less and bake. timing also will reduce, but for that i cannot tell how much. you will have to keep a check. for preheat also reduce the temperature to 15 or 20 degree less but the time for preheating will be same.

thanks nitha. if the oven is not showing any temperature, then the oven does not have the convection option. so you won’t be able to bake in this oven. but you can try cakes in the microwave mode. for this the recipe will be different and you will get microwave cake recipes on google. you can subscribe to get mails using this feedburner subscription link – https://feedburner.google.com/fb/a/mailverify?uri=VegRecipesOfIndia&loc=en_US or you can use any of the popular social media and subscribe.

if we dont have the pastry brush currently available to spread some oil on the bread rolls…how can we substitute that ?
use a small clean kitchen cotton napkin dipped in oil and with that spread the oil on the rolls.
Made these bread rolls for today’s brunch. Also added onions and capsicum in the mixture. These bread rolls are much tastier and healthier than the ones we get in market. Thanks Dasanna for the wonderful and easy-to-make recipy 🙂
they are a healthier version. in fact various stuffings can be added. even a simple potato-peas-carrot stuffing tastes good. thanks ritu for this positive feedback.
Hi….nice recipe can I bake with microwave in convection mode.
yes you can bake these bread rolls in the convection mode. use the same temperature as mentioned in the recipe. the timing will vary and will be quicker.

Can I use mozzarella cheese instead of cheddar cheese? And this I ask other recipes that use cheddar cheese
thanks sonal. yes you can use mozzarella cheese instead of cheddar cheese. if you are making cheese biscuits or straws then you have to use cheddar or processed cheese. otherwise in most recipes you can add mozzarella cheese instead of cheddar cheese
Bread roll is easy, healthy n too much liked by children. Thanks.

Hi Dassana, just saw this recipe and wanted to let you know that I made a version of this on the sandwich maker yesterday. The filling I used is the left over paneer burji which you have on your site. Followed the paneer bhurji recipe to the T except added a bit of red bell pepper and dry mango powder(amchur)
Both the sandwiches and paneer bhurji turned out extremely well. Your site has become my go to option whenever I am searching for a recipe . Planning to adapt your paneer tikka recipe to make chicken tikkas.
welcome anu. glad to know this. thanks for sharing your variation and positive feedback.
